Thursday night for me is usually like a Friday for everyone else. I always have Fridays off, but it’s a rare occasion that Ryan and I both get Thursday evening and Friday free from responsibilities. This week, we were lucky enough to have just that.
The day started as usual, wake up, get a tea at the cafe next door and get ready for work. I brought leftover pasta to heat up for lunch, and ended up making zero waste up until this point! I had a generally good day until something, or rather someone, made me feel slightly uncomfortable.
Now, I’m a feminist, and an outspoken one at that. If someone makes me feel uncomfortable or unsafe I say something, and I’m not afraid of being labeled negative names because I stand up for myself. A man came in to my cafe, where I work alone, and asked to take a photo of my ear. A strange request, so I asked more about why he wanted this picture. He went on about how I should consider being an ear model, how my ears were unique, and the whole thing just made me very uncomfortable. If you learn anything from this post, let it be this: Do not take a photo of someone without their consent. It’s not cool and it violates their privacy. Needless to say, of course, I spoke up and explained that I was uncomfortable with the photo and he needed to delete it. I told one of my male friends, and he got so worked up, it just made me feel like my thoughts were validated.
After work, I went to meet up with Ryan at our local bar, and had a few drinks. I ordered UberEats to the bar, but specified no napkins or cutlery. The food came in a aluminium wrapper, and a plastic bag which I intend to reuse. My friend, the bartender, insisted he throw out the wrapper so I quickly snapped a photo of it on counter (hence the out of focus, dark photo). The night ended around 3 am… a very rough night for me, as I’m usually in bed by 11pm, 12 if it’s a wild night.
Overall throughout my strange Thursday, I only made 1 piece of waste!
